The Castello delle Quattro Torri is located in Arignano, about 25 km from Turin. This relatively unknown castle is situated in a secluded area and is not easily visible to those unfamiliar with it. However, it is readily visible from the road that leads from the hamlet of Tetti Chiaffredo to its centre. This is the only Renaissance-style castle in Piedmont, and possibly in the whole of Northern Italy, that has never been transformed by any subsequent alterations or additions.
The castle has a square plan with four round towers at each corner and features a beautiful colonnaded courtyard surrounded by a large park.
While the exact date of its construction is not precisely known, it is believed to have been commissioned by Ludovico Costa degli Albussani following the destruction of the nearby Rocca in 1396, which was considered too costly to repair. It was therefore decided to build a property which had a residential rather than a military scope.
Construction of the Castle is estimated to have been carried out between 1407 and 1430, but only on three sides. The fourth eastern side was completed after 1576 at the request of Countess Caterina, who lived there with her family until the early 1600s.
It is still surrounded by a large park enclosed by a nineteenth-century brick wall, although many of the precious ornamental plants that once adorned it have been sold or cut down by various owners over the years.
Throughout the 20th century, the Costa family’s property was divided, leading to the construction of a brick wall separating the Castello delle Quattro Torri from the other family estates, including the stables, the ancient fortress and Villa Bianca.
After being sold by the Costa family to various owners and used for various purposes for many years (including, unfortunately, a zinc plating operation that severely damaged the interiors and ruined some exterior portions), the ‘Four Towers’ Castle was acquired around 1980 by the Zucca family.
The castle has now been restored to its former glory, thanks to the current owners’ dedicated efforts and extensive restoration projects.
