The history of Castello di Castagneto Carducci
“The prominent and celebrated Gherardesca family, who once held such a luminous position in the splendour of the Republic of Pisa, and who offered eternal subject matter to Dante’s divine muse through its great misfortunes, having lost the dominion of Pisa, nevertheless remained the owner of a vast territory and powerful castles. There were initially a great many of these, yet due to various vicissitudes, they were gradually divided up over time. A portion of the ancient Contea still constitutes the territory of the Community, of which Castagneto, formerly Gherardesca, is the capital. Many are the dwellings that make up the current Castle, which has expanded into a large village”.
Castagneto Carducci Castle, built by the Gherardesca Counts in the year 1000, has belonged to the same family for 34 generations. Like other castles in the Pisan Maremma region, it was erected by the Gherardesca family to defend the coast, which was threatened by Saracen incursions, and became their main residence in the mid-19th century when Count Ugolino, an ancestor of the current owners, moved there from his previous home at the Castle of Bolgheri, which he left to his younger brother Walfredo Fazio.
The Castle preserves archives from the family’s history and their connections with great protagonists of past times, including the Hohenstaufen Emperors of Swabia, the Gonzagas, the Appiani, the Medicis, the Orsinis, and the Salviatis.
The presence of the Della Gherardesca family in Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’
Among the family’s ancestors, undoubtedly the best known is Count Ugolino, to whom Dante dedicated one of the most famous and moving cantos of his Divine Comedy. His statue, which welcomes visitors in the square, is a replica of those on display in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Musée D’Orsay in Paris.
