Castello Sonnino

16 Beds · 3 Halls for events ·

Castello Sonnino is located twenty kilometres from Florence and holds great historical significance, having always played a primary socio-economic role in the area of Chianti Montespertoli. It is composed of a number of different architectural structures, the oldest of which dates back to the 13th century. Since the early 19th century, the Castle has been owned by the de Renzis Sonnino Barons. Visitors can explore the monumental cellars, the Vinsantaia (where Vin Santo wine is produced), and the oil cellar or ‘orciaia’ as it is called, while enjoying tastings of their wines and oils.

The Castle’s ‘locanda’ style restaurant offers traditional Tuscan rustic cuisine, and cooking classes with the family cook can also be reserved. Additionally, guests can visit the tower, the fortified courtyard, the reception rooms, the historical library and the archive of Baron Sidney Sonnino, who served as Prime Minister during World War I. The archive contains documents such as those of the Versailles conference, as well as memorabilia, photographs and extensive documentation on the Italian Risorgimento.

The residence also provides three beautifully restored apartments within the ancestral premises that can accommodate up to eighteen people. Castello Sonnino organises conferences and history lessons using documents from the historical and farming archives, which date back to the early 19th century and provide insights into what life was like in the Tuscan countryside. In recent years, a new project has been developed focusing on environmental sustainability, agriculture, the conservation and restoration of historical and cultural heritage, hospitality and resilience for future generations.

We are affiliated with the “Houses of Memory” museum network and collaborate with American, Canadian and Italian universities, hosting both students and professors.

The history of Castello Sonnino
Castello Sonnino is located twenty kilometres from Florence and holds great historical significance, having always played a primary socio-economic role in the area of Chianti Montespertoli. The agricultural activities on this perfectly preserved wine estate, which have existed since ancient times, have in recent years placed the focus on the production and marketing of wine and oil, combining high quality research with the experience of long tradition. Forty-five hectares of vineyards produce the grapes for the five red Sangiovese wines, the renowned Vin Santo which is considered an example of regional excellence and extra-virgin olive oil that bears the exclusive Laudemio Consortium trademark.
