Surrounded by vineyards, Villa Emo Capodilista, also known as “La Montecchia“, dominates a small hill and is perfectly positioned halfway between Padua and Vicenza.

The villa, a masterpiece of late Renaissance architecture, has belonged to the same noble family since the time of its original construction.

The property has recently been fully restored and refurnished, and it is now possible to reserve accommodation here (beds for up to 12 people). Group visits can also be organized for a minimum of 15 people.

The history of Villa Emo Capodilista
Work on the construction of Villa Emo Capodilista began back in 1568. The villa was commissioned by Gabriele Capodilista and designed by Dario Varotari (Verona 1539 – Padua 1596), an architect and painter who was a pupil of Veronese.

The four-sided floor plan is reproduced in the distribution of the interior rooms: there are in fact four rooms on the ground floor and four on the first, connected by a monumental staircase with four ramps in the shape of a Greek cross.

Varotari is also credited with the Mannerist frescoes in some of the rooms and the loggia on the ground floor, depicting mythological themes and scenes related to the family’s history.

Meanwhile, the frescoes in the upper loggia have been attributed to Antonio Vassalicchi, better known as Aliense (Milos, Greece 1556 – Venice 1629). The grotesque style decorations were executed by Eliodoro Forbicini (Verona circa 1533 – ?), while the statues surrounding the villa are attributable to the Bonazza family, talented Venetian sculptors who moved to Padua in the late 17th century.
