Villa La Foce in Chianciano Terme, Val d’Orcia
The interplay between the estate’s buildings, garden and natural surroundings positions La Foce as a significant historical witness to the architectural and cultural evolution in Tuscany during the 20th century. The garden was entirely created between 1924 and 1939 around the historical Renaissance residence owned by the Marchesi Antonio and Iris Origo and is considered the masterpiece of English architect Cecil Pinsent. The Villa and garden overlook the enchanting Val d’Orcia, with views of Mount Amiata in the background. Antonio Origo was passionately involved in the reclamation of the then very poor valley, while Iris dedicated herself to the garden, her books and the social welfare of the farming population. Iris Origo, an Anglo-American writer who grew up in Florence, related the powerful story of La Foce in in the wartime diaries she wrote, entitled “War in Val d’Orcia”, and “A Chill in the Air”.

The history of Villa La Foce
Villa La Foce was originally built in the late 15th century as a resting place for pilgrims and merchants travelling along this busy route. In around 1924, it became the home of Antonio and Iris Origo and developed into a flourishing agricultural farm. The garden, designed by Iris together with English architect Cecil Pinsent, is considered a superb example of the harmonious fusion between twentieth-century architecture and landscape, and is a perfect blend of the tastes and traditions of Italy and England.
