Between Verona and Lake Garda, at the gateway to Valpolicella, where the morainic hills sketch a landscape that looks painted, lies a rare place: Villa Padovani, a true Venetian Villa set within the quiet of the small hamlet of Piovezzano di Pastrengo. A jewel of stone, lime and exposed beams, brought back to life through the care of the Padovani Family, who rebuilt its history to pass it on and today safeguard its spirit. Here the stone and dark wood portal opens onto a world both ancient and alive — on the keystone, a crowned eagle with outstretched wings welcomes visitors, alongside the date 1692 — where time slows down and silence becomes a luxury once again.

The walls of Villa Padovani hold centuries of history: once a driving center of agricultural life and, at the same time, a place of otium et negotium — of leisure and rest, in the truest tradition of the Venetian Villa. So much history has passed through here, and today this place awaits those who wish to write a new chapter in it: the chapter of their own happy moments. A great courtyard immersed in greenery outside, an intimate, enveloping atmosphere inside. The building’s very architecture speaks of a family’s sense of hospitality — hospitality here holding its oldest meaning: to safeguard. Listed in the Catalogue of the Regional Institute of Venetian Villas and recognized by the Italian Historic Houses Association (ADSI), Villa Padovani holds the “five lions” classification — the highest level awarded by the Veneto Region, reserved for tourist accommodations that combine the highest standards of service with the prestige of a protected historic residence. In 2018, the restoration carried out by the Padovani Family was also honored by the same Regional Institute of Venetian Villas with the “Venetian Villa — Restoration Category” award, “for the work carried out and the commitment shown toward conservation and enhancement.”

Centuries of History

The origins of the residence date back to between the 15th and 16th centuries, with the first nucleus built by the Orci family. In 1672 the property was purchased by Giuseppe Carminati, a wealthy Veronese merchant of Bergamo origin: the Carminati coat of arms — the crowned eagle resting its claws on an agricultural cart — together with the date 1692 carved on the portal’s keystone, gave the entrance the appearance it still bears today.

It was under the Marinelli family, who inherited the estate, that the villa experienced its most splendid era. Starting in 1778, the family promoted an extensive ennoblement project, calling upon the leading figures of Verona’s artistic culture at the time to Piovezzano: architects Adriano Cristofoli and Luigi Trezza, and painters Carlo Ederle, Angelo dal Campo, Agostino Ugolini and Giovanni Battista Svidercoschi, known as “Gru,” a master of architectural quadratura, of whom two splendid capricci are still preserved, one of them signed. From those same years date the family chapel — later elevated to a public oratory in 1794 by concession of Doge Ludovico Manin — and the great flurry of building works that the estate steward, in a note from 1792, summed up in a phrase that has become the villa’s emblem: “zanzoche non si riposi mai” — “for it never rests.”

At the end of the 18th century the villa was the setting for a memorable episode. During the Italian Campaign, in July 1796, the residence became the headquarters of General André Masséna — who, shortly afterward, following the victory at Rivoli, would be honored with the title of Duke of Rivoli. During those days the courtyard hosted a banquet for more than one hundred and fifty French and Neapolitan officers, and tradition holds that Napoleon Bonaparte himself tied his horse’s reins at the estate. After the French period and the subsequent Austrian rule, the property passed through various hands, eventually coming to the Ronzetti family, who carried out the 1932 renovation — attested by the inscription ANNO DOMINI MCMXXXII above the door of the main house and by the monogram bearing Pietro Ronzetti’s initials set into the floor. In 2001 the residence finally passed to the Padovani Family, who restored it to its former splendor.

Staying in a Venetian Villa

Staying in the prestigious suites of Villa Padovani means sleeping surrounded by centuries of art, history and architecture. The rooms of the main house, decorated with friezes and mural paintings in the Veronese tradition, feature romantic-style furnishings in pastel tones, in elegant dialogue with the great exposed beams; in the ceiling of the entrance hall, a large oval depicts Pastrengo amid a flight of angels. Villa Padovani is a Historical Suite Home: only ten suites, ensuring genuine intimacy, with never more than twenty guests when the property is at full capacity. Not a hotel, but a residence — where one feels at home and privacy is the first comfort.

The day unfolds slowly: a dip in the pool, time suspended in the courtyard gardens among vines and olive trees, reading in the small sitting room over a good espresso, the spa in which to rediscover oneself. The pools are heated thanks to a natural geothermal spring which, through heat exchangers, warms the water without combustion or direct emissions: a gesture of genuine sustainability, even before being a service. In the morning, on fine days, breakfast is enjoyed outdoors; at any hour, the honesty bar is available with drinks and small treats — because here, guests are, quite simply, at home.

The Terme di Remo

Villa Padovani holds a rare treasure beneath its surface as well. Its subsoil conceals a hyperthermal spring that flows at 53°C, the hottest in the province of Verona, whose therapeutic properties are recognized by the Italian Ministry of Health for balneotherapy in arthro-rheumatic, dermatological and vascular conditions. Around this resource, the Villa has created Le Terme di Remo, a thermal spa facility for therapeutic purposes, equipped with a thermal pool, a treatment room and medical supervision. An extraordinary, and discreet, opportunity to focus on personal wellness without ever leaving the tranquility of the residence — where wellness is not staged, but substantive.

Villa Padovani has no restaurant, and this is not an omission but a choice: an invitation to discover the surrounding area, the Verona of villas and wine. Bordering Valpolicella, the Villa is just minutes from the great Amarone reds, and a little further from Bardolino, Custoza and Soave; Verona, with its Arena and UNESCO-listed historic center, is very close by; Lake Garda in its most refined stretch, the Dolomites as a day trip, Mantua and Padua as excursion destinations complete a stay in which culture, nature and wellness intertwine.
