The Castle of Montecavallo in Biella

The Montecavallo Castle was built by Filiberto Avogadro around 1830, in neo-Gothic style, on the remains of a stronghold belonging to the family since 1200.

The project was entrusted to the architect Dupuy who later also designed part of the old Hospital of the sick in Biella.

Montecavallo, although of recent construction compared to several medieval castles in the vicinity, enjoys a certain architectural importance as a rare example of neo-Gothic in the Biellese area.

There is a central square-shaped body and a glazed gallery that connects it to the chapel and to another block, now used for agritourism, cellars and charming rooms.

On the top of the hill, it includes a garden, park, forest and vineyards.

The history of the Castle of Montecavallo

The Montecavallo Castle was built by Filiberto Avogadro around 1830, in neo-Gothic style, on the remains of a stronghold belonging to the family since 1200.

Romanticism led to the identification of medieval architecture as the symbol of the history and tradition of the various European countries. One of the neo-Gothic masterpieces was certainly the London Parliament, built in the same period as Montecavallo. In Italy the neo-Gothic did not spread much due to a lack of tradition of stylistic reference.

Filiberto Avogadro therefore found himself faced with a modern, avant-garde style, and being a man of very open ideas he decided to adopt it to build his residence.

The project was entrusted to the architect Dupuy who later also designed part of the old Hospital of the sick in Biella.

The Chapel, dedicated to S. Filippo Neri, contains a marble Pietà by Cacciatori, master sculptor of Carrara, who also made the statues of Carlo Felice and his wife Maria Cristina in the abbey of Altacomba, and a Guardian Angel of Bienaimè, sculptor pupil of Thorvaldsen.
