The story of Astapiana Villa Giusso

Astapiana is remembered for the first time (with the ancient name of Astichiano) in the 1578 from Monsignor Sacra, who, in an apostolic report, laments the state of ruin in which the ancient church of S. Maria in Jerusalem, probably of Angevin-Aragonese origin.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the area of Vico Equense is chosen for the erection of a Camaldolese monastery and in the 1604, on an urgent invitation of the Prince of Conca and Lord of Vico Equense, Matteo di Capua and thanks to the generous legacy of a certain Cesare Zaffarano, work began, ended three years later late.

Twelve cells were built for the monks and two guest houses, one of which is of considerable size and value for the majolica kitchen. In addition, a double wall was built on which stood two turrets. Only one church worthy of the missing was missing religious complex, which has now become a priority site. It was remedied in two successive occasions: initially in 1641, when on the place of the ancient church there arose another, consecrated to S. Maria in Jerusalem and S. Romualdo, founder of the Camaldolese order; a century later a renovation of the building was proceeded from its foundations.

The new church, finished in 1774, with a single nave and four side chapels, was embellished with five altars (particularly the main one, which later had singular vicissitudes) and three large canvases commissioned to Nicola Cacciapuoti: the Nativity, as altarpiece and, for the walls of the nave, the Salita al Calvario and the Crucifixion. Such splendor, however, did not last long: in the 1807, during the Napoleonic domination, the ecclesiastical bodies were abolished and the monastic orders dissolved. The monks had to leave the convent, forfeited by the royal estate and the whole complex was in a state of neglect. In particular the volumes of the library were dispersed and the church was stripped, the main altar was brought to S. Marcellino in Naples and in Duomo of Sorrento then (where he currently occupies the place of honor, though now dismembered).

In the senior guest quarters he found shelter, in the 1815, Gioacchino Murat fleeing after the military defeat.

The former monastery, which became the Royal Site after the return of the Bourbon on the throne of Naples, he was then surrendered to the duke Luigi Giusso who set up an experimental production for the kingdom: silkworm breeding. It had an excellent start, but after a few decades had to be abandoned, following an epidemic that decimated silkworms and that eliminated this type of culture from the Sorrento peninsula. The Duke then renounced his innovative purposes and turned the guest house into a country residence, a function he held throughout the twentieth century. Since then, the site has acquired the current name, Astapiana Villa Giusso.

Various generations of the Giusso family they are now alternated and the current descendants deal directly with the estate, consisting of numerous buildings and surrounded by about fourteen hectares of land.

In ideal continuity with the past, when the monks welcomed and refreshed travelers, Astapiana Villa Giusso invites you now, as then, to become participants in its history and to enjoy its hospitality and its magical atmosphere.
